Our vision for 2009
Science journalists play a vital role in informing and educating their audiences about the latest advances in science, yet face unprecedented challenges in serving the public’s need for accurate and insightful reporting. Audiences want stories round the clock, editors want stories faster and sexier. And many reporters are under pressure to convince their editors that their stories matter as much to their audiences as those that deal with politics, economics or crime.
By bringing journalists and science communicators together from across the world WCSJ2009 was a forum for debate on critical science journalism issues, and an opportunity for reporting about the latest developments in science and technology.
WCSJ2009 aims were to:
- raise the quality and impact of science journalism worldwide
- share excellence in independent journalism
- compare experiences with counterparts from developed and developing countries
- promote professional development
- encourage new partnerships
- report on the latest advances in science and technology
2009 Themes & sessions

The programme activities included plenaries, symposia and debates on science journalism issues, hot topics in scientific research, news briefings and trips to sites of scientific interest in the UK and other parts of Europe.

Networking, Twinning, and Mentoring at WCSJ2009
WCSJ2009 provided opportunities for science journalists to network with others from their region and from other world regions, to share experiences and ideas, and create lasting professional relationships. New developments were encouraged for member associations, including twinning between associations and ‘South-to-South’ networking that enables journalists from developing and emerging economies to share ideas and solutions for common problems.
Skills Building
WCSJ2009 invited experienced journalists and media training organisations to provide skills-building workshops tailored to suit the various professional needs of journalism students to mid-career and senior-level journalists and editors.
