Ted Nield As befits the home of the world’s oldest professional association for science writers, journalists and communicators, London can lay claim to being the capital city of world science reporting. WCSJ2009 delegates coming to this great city will be able to benefit from the widest possible pool of professional talent, expertise and experience – as well as having the opportunity to visit many of the UK and Europe’s leading centres of scientific and technical excellence.

Our vision for 2009

Science journalists play a vital role in informing and educating their audiences about the latest advances in science, yet face unprecedented challenges in serving the public’s need for accurate and insightful reporting. Audiences want stories round the clock, editors want stories faster and sexier. And many reporters are under pressure to convince their editors that their stories matter as much to their audiences as those that deal with politics, economics or crime.

By bringing journalists and science communicators together from across the world WCSJ2009 will be a forum for debate on critical science journalism issues, and an opportunity for reporting about the latest developments in science and technology.

WCSJ2009 aims to:

  • raise the quality and impact of science journalism worldwide
  • share excellence in independent journalism
  • compare experiences with counterparts from developed and developing countries
  • promote professional development
  • encourage new partnerships
  • report on the latest advances in science and technology

Networking, Twinning, and Mentoring at WCSJ2009

WCSJ2009 will provide opportunities for science journalists to network with others from their region and from other world regions, to share experiences and ideas, and create lasting professional relationships. New developments will be encouraged for member associations, including twinning between associations and ‘South-to-South’ networking that enables journalists from developing and emerging economies to share ideas and solutions for common problems.

Skills Building

WCSJ2009 is inviting experienced journalists and media training organisations to provide skills-building workshops tailored to suit the various professional needs of journalism students to mid-career and senior-level journalists and editors.
